Adopt-A-Trail

The Conservation Department needs help assessing the condition of trails on its lands where January ice storms downed trees.  The agency's Adopt-A-Trail program offers a way to get involved in this work.  Volunteers will help clear fallen timbre from dozens of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails.  Volunteers are needed especially for trails along the storm-ravaged area along I-44 between Joplin and St. Louis.

Participants can include families, Scout troops, hiking clubs, and other organizations with an interest in the outdoors or a strong connection to a particular area.  The program offers people a way to make a personal, concrete contribution to conservation.

Other activities that volunteers help with are keeping the trail surface free of sticks, rocks, and other debris, pruning small limbs from the trail corridor, cleaning water bars and drainage ditches, and clearing debris from bridges, stairs, and viewing decks.  Other responsibilities include cleaning up litter, maintaining the trailhead area including the parking lot, bulletin board and trail signs, and reporting vandalism, trail hazards or other safety issues.  Also, depending on your interests, you may take part in building benches, repairing trail structures, or helping with environmental restoration work.
